Walking different breeds

As a dog walker, I’ve come across many owners of smaller breeds who believe their dogs don’t need regular walks. After all, if they have a garden to run around in or are carried around in a bag, surely they’re getting enough exercise, right? Unfortunately, this isn’t the case, and I want to explain why even smaller dogs need regular walks—ideally twice a day—and how even a short 20-minute stroll can benefit them.

1. Physical Health and Weight Control

No matter the size of your dog, physical activity is essential to maintain a healthy weight and avoid obesity. Smaller dogs, like Chihuahuas or Pomeranians, may look like they’re full of energy when bouncing around the house, but it’s not enough to meet their exercise needs. A short, 20-minute walk helps to burn off energy, maintain muscle tone, and support cardiovascular health. Regular exercise can also reduce the risk of joint problems and other health issues as they age.

2. Mental Stimulation

Dogs are intelligent creatures, and walks provide valuable mental stimulation. The sights, smells, and sounds they encounter on a walk engage their senses and keep their brains active. For smaller breeds like Yorkshire Terriers or Shih Tzus, this stimulation is essential for preventing boredom and destructive behavior at home. Even 20 minutes outside provides a whole world of experiences that enrich their lives and keep their minds sharp.

3. Socialization

Walks are not just about exercise—they’re also a great opportunity for your dog to meet other dogs, people, and explore new environments. This is crucial for socialization, particularly for smaller breeds that may not get out as much as larger dogs. Socialized dogs are generally more well-behaved and less anxious, which is especially important for breeds that can develop anxiety or fear-based behaviors, like Dachshunds or French Bulldogs.

4. Stress Relief and Relaxation

Believe it or not, regular walks can help reduce stress for your dog. Just as humans use exercise to relax and unwind, dogs benefit from the same. A short walk can help your dog release pent-up energy and stress. Small breeds, especially those that tend to be more high-strung (like a Jack Russell or Beagle), can experience a calming effect after a walk, making them happier and more relaxed at home.

5. Routine and Bonding

Dogs thrive on routine, and daily walks provide structure to their day. Knowing they’re going for a walk helps reduce anxiety and gives them something to look forward to. Moreover, walks are a fantastic way to bond with your dog. Spending time walking together, even if it’s just a short stroll, strengthens your relationship and trust.

6. Bathroom Breaks

Many small dog owners rely on puppy pads or the garden for bathroom breaks, but this isn’t ideal for their long-term habits. Regular walks ensure that your dog gets the opportunity to go to the bathroom in different locations, reducing the risk of accidents indoors and promoting healthy bladder and bowel habits.

The Bottom Line

Whether your dog is large or small, a couple of short walks each day is critical for their health, well-being, and happiness. While it might seem like your small dog is getting enough exercise around the house, they need the benefits that come from walking—both physically and mentally. A 20-minute walk in the morning and evening can make a world of difference in their overall quality of life.
